Is it normal to be alone in college?
Yes, it’s normal to spend a lot of time alone in college, and many people feel lonely while they’re finding their people. It doesn’t mean you’re doing college wrong or that it will always feel this way.
College can be a big social reset: familiar friends may be far away, and meeting people often takes more time than it looks like from the outside. Some people genuinely enjoy plenty of solo time; others feel lonely even when they’re surrounded by classmates. Both are normal.
If you want more connection, try repeating low-pressure situations—clubs, study groups, a campus job, or sitting with the same people in class. Friendships often grow from seeing each other regularly, not from one magical “make friends” moment. And if being alone feels painful or keeps you from doing things you care about, talking with someone you trust or campus support can help.
