Is it normal to be upset about the gender of your baby?
Yes. Feeling disappointed about your baby’s gender is a common reaction, and it doesn’t mean you won’t love or bond with your child.
You may have pictured your family a certain way, or feel a loss for the future you imagined. Pregnancy can also bring intense emotions, and other people’s expectations may add to them. You’re allowed to feel disappointed without being a bad parent or needing to pretend you’re instantly thrilled.
For many people, the feeling softens as the pregnancy goes on or once the baby arrives; for others, it takes longer. Try to give yourself room to feel what you feel rather than judging yourself for it. If the distress sticks around, feels overwhelming, or is affecting your wellbeing, talking it through with someone you trust or a healthcare professional can help.
