Is it normal to laugh when people die?
It can be normal to laugh when you hear someone has died, especially if you’re shocked, uncomfortable, or nervous. Laughing doesn’t automatically mean you’re glad they died or don’t care.
People sometimes laugh as a stress reaction when something feels overwhelming or hard to process. It can also happen because the situation feels awkward, or because your brain hasn’t caught up with the news yet. Plenty of people have an out-of-place laugh and feel bad or confused afterward.
The reason matters, though. Laughing from nerves or shock is different from taking pleasure in someone’s suffering. And if the person who died hurt you, feeling relief or even laughing at the news can come with complicated emotions; it doesn’t make you a monster. What you do with those feelings—and how you treat the people around you—matters more than one unexpected reaction.
