Is it normal to lie in a relationship?
Small, occasional lies happen in relationships, but repeated or serious dishonesty can damage trust. What matters is what the lie was about, why it happened, and whether you can talk honestly about it now.
Most people have told a small untruth at some point—maybe to avoid an unnecessary argument or keep a harmless surprise secret. That doesn’t automatically mean your relationship is doomed, though even “little” lies can add up if they become a pattern.
Lying about something important, like money, fidelity, or a decision that affects your partner, is a different story. It makes sense to feel hurt or unsure what to believe. A useful next step is to talk about what happened and what each of you needs to rebuild trust; you don’t have to pretend it’s no big deal just because lying is common.
