Is it normal to be lonely in university?
Yes—it’s normal to feel lonely at university, even when you’re surrounded by people. Making close friends and finding your place can take longer than it looks from the outside.
University can put you around people all day without giving you the feeling of being known by anyone. New routines, living away from home, big classes, and the pressure to seem like you’re having the time of your life can all make loneliness hit harder. Plenty of students feel this way, even if they don’t advertise it.
Try making connection smaller and more regular: talk to someone after class, go back to the same club or activity, or ask a classmate to grab coffee. It can feel awkward at first; friendship often grows through seeing the same people repeatedly, not one magical campus moment.
If the loneliness is sticking around and making it hard to function, talking with someone you trust or your university’s student support service can help. You don’t have to wait until things feel unbearable to reach out.
