Is it normal to be obsessed with true crime?
Yes—being really into true crime is common, and it doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with you. It’s worth reassessing if it’s taking over your life, disrupting your sleep, or leaving you constantly afraid.
Lots of people are drawn to true crime: the mystery, the puzzle-solving, and the chance to understand how something frightening happened can make it hard to stop watching or listening. Being fascinated by crime stories doesn’t mean you approve of the crimes or want to commit one.
People do have different reactions to the genre. Some find it compelling or even comforting to learn about danger from a safe distance; others find it grim or exploitative, especially when a story treats real victims like entertainment.
If your interest is crowding out sleep, responsibilities, or other things you enjoy—or leaving you anxious about danger all the time—that’s a good cue to take a break or set limits. Otherwise, having a favorite dark rabbit hole is pretty ordinary.
