Is it normal to be scared of your own reflection?
A brief startle around your reflection, especially in dim light or when you’re tired, is pretty common. Being seriously or regularly afraid of it is less common, but it doesn’t automatically mean anything is wrong.
Your brain can do a quick double take when it catches a face unexpectedly—particularly in a dark room, after waking up, or when you’re stressed or tired. Reflections can also feel uncanny because you’re seeing a familiar face move in a way that’s slightly out of sync with what you expect.
A passing “whoa, that’s me” moment happens to plenty of people. If the fear is persistent, makes you avoid mirrors, or gets in the way of everyday life, it may be worth talking it through with someone you trust or a mental health professional; you don’t have to just put up with it.
