Is it normal to hate family?
Yes, it’s normal to feel like you hate your family sometimes, especially after hurt, conflict, or feeling trapped by expectations. The feeling doesn’t make you a bad person or mean you have to act on it.
Family can push buttons nobody else knows how to reach. Anger, resentment, or wanting nothing to do with them can build up when you feel criticized, ignored, controlled, or repeatedly hurt. Sometimes “I hate them” is shorthand for “I can’t stand how things are right now.”
People have very different relationships with their families, and you’re not required to feel close just because you’re related. You can care about someone and still need distance or firmer boundaries. If the feeling is constant, it may help to talk it through with someone you trust and think about what contact feels safe and manageable for you.
