Is it normal to hate physical touch?
Yes, it’s normal to dislike physical touch, even from people you care about. You’re allowed to set boundaries around hugs, cuddling, and other kinds of contact.
People vary a lot in how much touch they enjoy. For some, hugs feel warm and comforting; for others, they feel overwhelming, distracting, or simply unpleasant. Sensory preferences, mood, past experiences, and who’s touching you can all play a part—and you don’t need a special reason to say no.
You can be affectionate in other ways, or be okay with some kinds of touch but not others. A simple “I’m not much of a hugger” is enough; other people should respect that. If your feelings about touch have changed suddenly or are causing you distress, it may be worth talking them through with someone you trust.
