Is it normal to love and hate your partner?
Yes—lots of people feel deep love and intense frustration with their partner, sometimes close together. It’s worth paying attention if the “hate” feeling is constant or the relationship leaves you feeling unsafe or worn down.
You can love someone and still be furious, irritated, or fed up with them. When you’re close to someone, their habits and disagreements can hit especially hard; “I hate you right now” often means “I’m overwhelmed and angry,” not that your love has vanished.
The occasional swing between affection and annoyance is pretty ordinary. If resentment or contempt is becoming the default, though, it may be a sign that something needs addressing—whether that’s a recurring conflict, unmet needs, or simply a relationship that isn’t working well for you. And love doesn’t make threats, control, or mistreatment okay.
