Is it normal to not understand a 2-year-old?
Mostly.Normal for most people
Yes—2-year-olds can be hard to understand, especially if you don’t spend much time with them. Their speech is still developing, and familiar caregivers often understand more than other people do.
Toddlers may leave out sounds, mix up words, or use their own little shorthand. So it’s common to catch only part of what a 2-year-old is saying, even when they’re communicating plenty through gestures, expressions, and context.
If you’re their caregiver, mention it to their pediatrician if they aren’t using simple two-word phrases or you’re concerned about how they communicate or hear. Otherwise, a lot of “What was that, buddy?” is just part of talking with toddlers.
