Yes, it’s normal to smell rain—and lots of people love that earthy scent. It mostly comes from compounds released by soil and plants when rain hits the ground.
That fresh, earthy smell after rain is often called petrichor. Rain itself doesn’t have much of an odor; the scent comes from things like plant oils and a soil compound called geosmin getting kicked into the air when raindrops hit the ground.
You may notice it more after a dry spell, and some people are especially good at picking up geosmin. So if you stop to enjoy the smell—or notice rain coming before anyone else does—nothing weird is going on.
