Is it normal to talk to imaginary people?
Yes, talking to imaginary people can be a normal way to use your imagination, rehearse conversations, or work through feelings. It’s worth paying closer attention if it feels frightening, uncontrollable, or disrupts your life.
Lots of people talk aloud to an imaginary friend, a character, or an imagined version of someone they know. You might be playing out a scene, practicing what you want to say, or just giving your thoughts a voice. If you know the person is imaginary and it feels comfortable, it’s generally nothing to worry about.
It’s different if you can’t control the conversations, they scare or upset you, or you feel sure the person is real and communicating with you. If that’s happening or getting in the way of everyday life, consider talking it over with a mental health professional.
