Is it normal to argue at the start of a relationship?
Some disagreements early in a relationship are normal as you learn each other’s habits and expectations. Frequent, cruel, or intimidating fights are worth taking seriously, especially if neither of you can repair things afterward.
A disagreement early on doesn’t automatically mean you’re a bad match. You’re still figuring out how each other communicates, what you expect, and which little habits make you twitch. Lots of couples have a bumpy moment or two while they get to know each other.
What matters is how you argue: Can you listen, cool off, apologize, and work things out? If the relationship already feels like constant conflict—or arguments involve insults, threats, or fear—that’s not just “new relationship adjustment.” It’s worth stepping back and considering whether this feels respectful and safe.
