Is it normal to hate one of your kids?

Depends.It depends

A passing feeling of hatred or resentment toward your child can happen when you’re overwhelmed, but feeling that way often or intensely is worth taking seriously. The feeling doesn’t define you; what matters is keeping your child safe and getting support with what’s behind it.

Parents can feel anger, resentment, or even “I hate you” in a brutal moment—especially when they’re exhausted, under pressure, or stuck in a painful pattern with one child. That doesn’t automatically mean you don’t love them or that you’re a bad parent. Feelings can be alarming without being a plan or a choice.

If this is persistent, focused on one child, or making it hard to treat them safely and fairly, don’t just try to tough it out. Talk with someone you trust or a therapist, and look for practical help with the stress or conflict underneath it. If you’re worried you might hurt your child, create some space if you can and get immediate help from a trusted adult or local crisis service.
