Is it normal to dislike your child?

Depends.It depends

It’s possible to dislike your child at times, especially when you’re exhausted, overwhelmed, or struggling with their behavior. Having the feeling doesn’t make you a bad parent; what matters is how you treat them and whether you get support if the feeling sticks around.

Parents don’t automatically enjoy every part of their child—or parenting—every day. Sometimes “I dislike my child” really means “I can’t stand this behavior right now” or “I’m completely worn down.” Those feelings can show up during stressful phases, and they don’t cancel out love or make you a bad person.

If the dislike feels constant, is getting stronger, or is making it hard to care for your child kindly, you deserve support rather than shame. Talk with someone you trust or a therapist, doctor, or parenting professional. If you’re worried you might hurt your child, put some safe space between you and them and get immediate help from a trusted adult or local crisis service.
