Is it normal to hate your kids?
Having flashes of “I hate this” or even “I hate you” when you’re overwhelmed can happen, and it doesn’t automatically mean you don’t love your kids. If the feeling is constant or you’re worried you might hurt them, it’s time to get support.
Parenting can push you past your limits, especially when you’re exhausted, stressed, or getting no time to yourself. In a heated moment, anger or resentment can come out as “I hate my kids,” even when what you really hate is the pressure and the situation. Feelings aren’t the same as actions, and having an ugly thought doesn’t make you a bad parent.
If hatred is how you feel most of the time, or you feel numb, trapped, or unable to care for them, don’t just white-knuckle it. Tell someone you trust and reach out for practical help or a mental health professional. If you’re afraid you might hurt your kids, get another safe adult with them and seek immediate support.
