Is it normal to lose weight quickly at first?
Depends.It depends
If you’ve recently changed how you eat, it’s common for weight to drop faster at first, often because you’re losing water. If the loss is unintentional or keeps happening quickly, it’s worth getting checked.
When you first cut back on food or carbs, your body may use stored carbohydrate for energy and release some of the water stored with it. That can make the scale drop quickly at first; weight loss often slows after that, and day-to-day numbers can bounce around too.
If you haven’t been trying to lose weight, or you’re continuing to lose it rapidly, don’t assume it’s just normal fluctuation—check in with a healthcare professional.
