Is it normal to not feel sympathy?
Yes, it’s normal not to feel sympathy in every situation—or to feel it less strongly than other people seem to. If you rarely feel it at all, what matters is whether that bothers you or affects how you treat people.
You may feel more sympathy for some people or situations than others. Stress, tiredness, feeling emotionally overwhelmed, or simply not relating to what someone is going through can leave you unmoved; you can still choose to be considerate even when the warm fuzzy feeling doesn’t show up.
People differ in how strongly they feel and show sympathy, so one flat reaction doesn’t mean you’re a bad person. If the lack of feeling is persistent, upsetting, or causing problems in your relationships, it may help to talk it through with someone you trust or a counselor.
