Is it normal to only chew on one side?
Some people naturally favor one side when they chew, but always avoiding the other side can also happen because of tooth pain, a bite issue, or jaw discomfort. If it’s new, persistent, or comes with pain, it’s worth asking a dentist about it.
It’s not unusual to have a preferred chewing side, especially if the difference is slight and you can comfortably chew on both sides. But if you consistently avoid one side, your mouth may be giving you a reason—like a sensitive tooth, a missing or damaged tooth, or discomfort in your jaw.
Notice whether there’s pain, swelling, trouble opening your mouth, or a change in your bite. If the one-sided chewing is new, keeps happening, or comes with any of those symptoms, check in with a dentist; otherwise, it may simply be a habit.
