Is it normal to talk to yourself negatively?
Yes—negative self-talk is common, especially when you’re stressed or feeling insecure. It’s worth paying attention to if it’s constant, feels impossible to challenge, or is weighing heavily on your day-to-day life.
Lots of people have an inner critic that replays mistakes, predicts the worst, or says things they’d never say to a friend. That doesn’t make those thoughts true, and having them doesn’t mean there’s something wrong with you.
It can help to notice the thought and ask, “Would I say this to someone I care about?” You don’t have to force yourself into fake positivity; even a more balanced thought can take the edge off.
If the negative self-talk is relentless or is affecting your mood, relationships, or daily life, talking it through with someone you trust or a mental health professional may help.
