Is it normal to feel jealous in an open relationship?
Yes, jealousy is normal in an open relationship. It doesn’t mean you’re bad at non-monogamy or that the relationship is doomed; it can be a cue to talk about reassurance, boundaries, or what you need.
Open relationships don’t switch off jealousy. You might feel it when a partner starts seeing someone new, when plans change, or when you’re unsure where you stand. Plenty of people in consensually non-monogamous relationships feel it sometimes, even when they genuinely want the arrangement.
What matters is how you handle it. Try to name what’s underneath the jealousy—fear of being replaced, wanting more time together, or a boundary that needs revisiting—and talk about it without treating the feeling as proof that anyone did something wrong. Reassurance and clearer agreements can help; so can admitting that the current setup isn’t working for you. Open relationships aren’t a contest in being endlessly chill.
