Is it normal to look fatter after working out?
Yes, it’s normal to look a little bigger or puffier right after a workout. Muscle swelling, temporary water retention, and bloating can change how your body looks for a while; it isn’t sudden fat gain.
A workout sends more blood to your muscles, and the muscles can temporarily swell—especially after strength training. Your body may also hold onto a bit of water as it repairs itself, and food, drinks, or exercise-related bloating can add to the effect. The mirror can be a bit of a drama queen about all this.
It usually settles down as your body recovers. Gaining fat doesn’t happen from one workout or change your appearance immediately, so a post-workout snapshot isn’t a reliable way to judge progress. If the swelling is painful, severe, or doesn’t go away, get it checked out.
