Is it normal to not remember your childhood before age 12?
Unusual.Less common, but harmless
It’s common for memories from early childhood to be hazy, but having no memories at all from before age 12 is less typical. It doesn’t automatically mean anything is wrong or that something bad happened.
Most people have few or no clear memories from their earliest years, and memories from later childhood can be patchy too. But many people can recall at least a few moments from before age 12, so having a complete blank is less common.
Memory varies a lot, and an absence of memories by itself can’t tell you why. It doesn’t prove that you experienced trauma. If the gaps are upsetting, affect your life, or come along with other memory problems, it may be worth talking them over with a mental health professional or doctor.
