Is it normal to regret getting a dog?
Yes, it’s normal to have moments—or even a stretch of time—when you regret getting a dog, especially while adjusting to the work and change in routine. Those feelings don’t mean you’re a bad person or that you’ll feel this way forever.
A dog can bring a lot of joy and still be a huge adjustment: less free time, disrupted sleep, training messes, and the feeling that you’re responsible every minute. Plenty of new owners get the “puppy blues” or wonder if they made a mistake, and the bond can take time to grow.
Try to pin down what’s making you regret it. More support, a training class, doggy day care, or a realistic routine may help. If the dog truly isn’t a good fit despite your best efforts, thoughtfully finding a responsible new home can be kinder than keeping everyone miserable. You don’t have to pretend it’s easy to be a good dog owner.
