Is it normal to regret getting a pet?
Yes, it’s normal to have regrets or feel overwhelmed after getting a pet, especially while you’re adjusting to the new responsibility. Those feelings don’t mean you don’t love your pet or that you’re a bad owner.
A pet can bring a lot of lovely things—and also mess, expense, lost sleep, and a sudden change to your routine. It’s common to have a stretch of “What have I done?” feelings, especially early on or when training and settling in are harder than you expected.
Give yourself and your pet some time to adjust, and ask for practical help if you can. If the situation still feels unmanageable or the pet’s needs aren’t a good fit for your home, looking into responsible rehoming through a reputable rescue or shelter is kinder than trying to tough it out or abandoning them. Feeling regret doesn’t make you a bad person; what matters is how you handle it.
