Is it normal to feel regret after adopting a dog?
Yes—feeling regret or overwhelmed after adopting a dog is common, especially while you’re adjusting to the new routine. It doesn’t automatically mean you made the wrong choice or that you don’t love your dog.
A new dog can turn your schedule, sleep, budget, and living space upside down. Lots of people have a “what have I done?” stretch—sometimes called the puppy blues—even when they wanted the dog and are doing their best.
Give yourself and your dog some time to settle in, and make the workload manageable with routines or help from someone you trust. If the situation still feels unworkable after a fair adjustment period, it’s okay to talk honestly with the shelter or rescue about responsible options. Asking for help doesn’t make you a bad person or a bad dog owner.
