Is it normal to argue with your therapist?
Yes, it’s normal to disagree or even argue with your therapist sometimes. What matters is whether you can talk it through and still feel respected and heard.
Therapy can bring up strong feelings, and your therapist may misunderstand you or say something you disagree with. A tense moment doesn’t mean therapy is failing; working through that friction can sometimes help you understand what’s going on between you.
You can bring it up directly: “I felt annoyed when you said that,” or “I don’t think you understood me.” A good therapist should be willing to listen, explain their perspective, and own it if they got something wrong. If they repeatedly dismiss you, make you feel unsafe, or cross boundaries, it’s okay to reconsider whether they’re the right fit.
