Is it normal to not want to be around your child?
Yes, it can be normal to need distance from your child sometimes, especially when you’re exhausted or overwhelmed. If you feel this way most of the time, or worry you might lose control, it’s worth getting support.
A lot of parents sometimes want a break from being around their child. Love doesn’t make you endlessly patient or immune to noise, stress, lack of sleep, or needing time alone. Wanting space isn’t the same as not loving your child.
If the feeling is constant, getting stronger, or making it hard to care for your child, you don’t have to just tough it out. Tell someone you trust and consider talking with a healthcare professional; burnout, depression, and other stressors can make parenting feel unbearable. If you’re worried you might hurt your child, put them somewhere safe and get immediate help from a trusted person or local emergency service.
