Is it normal to want to hit someone when you're angry?
A flash of wanting to hit someone when you’re furious is a common impulse, and it doesn’t mean you’ll act on it. What matters is keeping the other person safe and stepping away if you feel close to losing control.
Anger can come with a sudden urge to lash out, especially when you feel hurt, cornered, or disrespected. Lots of people have the thought; having it isn’t the same as choosing to act on it. Hitting someone can seriously hurt them, so the boundary is clear even when the feeling is understandable.
If the urge feels strong, put some distance between you and the person, take a few minutes before responding, and do something that lets the anger cool without involving them. If you’re worried you might actually hit someone, leave the situation and reach out to someone you trust for help staying away until you’re calmer.
